Delami Red Legend Goes Home to Crown Ridge in Ontario

Ten years ago, we imported the 2014 Welsh Mountain Pony colt, Delami Red Legend. We needed a sire for our Nerwyn Gwyn daughters, and we had long admired Sunwillow Galong and his pedigree. Galong was born a few years before Gwyn, and we saw pictures of him and thought, that's the type we'll bring in for Gwyn's daughters: ultra-typey, with great legs and bone, extravagant movement, and by all accounts, wonderfully tempered.
After we imported Legend, we made a pony-centric trip to Wales and England and had the opportunity to meet Galong at the Delami Stud. What a character, with loads of presence, and clearly a Waller family favourite. They clicked at Galong to go show off, and he happily obliged—all knees and hocks and reach with tail flagging—before trotting back, skidding to a halt in front of us, and giving a big snort.
We chose Delami Red Legend as a foal and were excited that he was linebred to one of our favourites: Pendock Legend, the renowned sire and show pony. Our Red Legend turned out to be a well balanced, super typey pony with wonderful legs, spectacular movement and super light on his feet, with a gentle, sweet personality. He’s the easiest stallion, and many times we’ve said we could happily keep him for life, but our mare herd is small, and we’ve now retained two beautiful daughters (Gwynevere and Isadora), so we’ve been feeling guilty, holding onto such a quality stallion with much to offer Welsh and sport breeding programs.
This is how Jenna Ponzo at Crown Ridge Farms came to lease him a few years ago, and so it is that he’s going back to his new home. Jenna tells people Legend "ruined other Section As" for her, because of “how unbelievably special he is, in every way.”
The last time Legend was with Jenna, we received wonderful updates of showring successes, including Supreme Champion and WPCAO High Point Res. Champion Section A stallion; cuddles with his favourite people, like Jenna’s wee niece, Sophie, who loves to feed him carrots; and just generally living the best life. We’re grateful that, if we must let him go, he’s going somewhere he’ll be well loved and used.
We’ll miss this sweetheart and his lovely foals. Before he leaves, we plan to use him for one more season, and then he’s off to Ontario to finish the 2024 breeding season! Jenna offers AI services, so for the folks who have been waiting for a Legend foal, be sure to check in with Jenna!
