Yearling buddies: Alvesta Owain & Alvesta Fflach

The three-day, three-judge Wild Rose Welsh & Open Pony Show in Alberta is always a highlight. This year, we took four ponies: Alvesta Naiya, Alvesta Infinity, Alvesta Owain, and Alvesta Fflach.

For yearling buddies, Owain and Fflach, this was their first event off the farm.

Alvesta Naiya

Llanarth Tarquin x Alvesta Sweet N Spicy by CadlanValley Pirate

Alvesta Naiya, 8-year-old Section B mare

It's been years since Naiya's been shown, so it was exciting to see her go Supreme Champion Welsh under Diana Cappellanti and Res. Supreme under Megan Blythe Burtness. Naiya was also awarded a reserve in both the competitive Sport Pony and Model Hunter championships!

Eight years have passed since Llanarth Tarquin's first foal crop when we met Naiya. A gentle, intelligent pony, she has made a wonderful first riding pony for kids in our family. At this show, both Naiya and Ava experienced their first under saddle event, where they had a great time competing together, and took the fastest time in their pole bending class! You know it was a success when the first words out of the rider's mouth are "We have to do that again next year!"

As Naiya takes a break from riding to have foals, other future Alvesta broodmares are in training. Interestingly enough, Ava's favourite trainee is our other Tarquin daughter, Alvesta Angelina—a bold, peppy pony to Naiya's laid back, easy going type.

Alvesta Infinity

Cat Creek Innuendo x Alvesta Caris by Nerwyn Gwyn

Alvesta Infinity, 4-year-old Welsh Mountain Pony stallion

Now four, Infinity has been shown to championships since he was a yearling, including Youngstock and Res. Supreme. He's an gentle, sensible young stallion who enjoys getting out, so is always fun to show. This year, Infinity went Gr. Ch. Section A—the last championship he would win in our ownership, as he's since been sold to Dona Currie in Minnesota.

When we bred his dam to Winona Myers' Cat Creek Innuendo in Kansas, it was with the hope that she might produce a filly for our program, as it's difficult to keep homebred colts when our small broodmare band is mostly related. But from the start, we felt Infinity was special, and we sure like his sire's outside bloodlines, so we kept him as long as we could, to show and sire a couple of foals before he moved on. We're so glad that he has gone to a good home with a quality breeding program to contribute to.

Alvesta Fflach

Alvesta Fflach: 11-month-old Welsh Mountain Pony gelding

Being a late baby (born July 17), our active yearling Welsh Mountain Pony gelding could have had more weight and maturity for the show ring, but we wanted to get him out for experience. He's a smart boy and came a long way, deciding he was quite confident in the experience.

He's a mover and was placed first and second (two judges) in a large liberty class, with seconds in his Welsh class to a nicely turned out filly of Shelley Snyder's and Kasandra Miller's. Really pleased with him, our first foal from Delami Red Legend.

Alvesta Owain, yearling Section B colt

So pleased to see our Section B yearling colt go Futurity Welsh Youngstock Ch. and Gr. Ch. Sport Pony under judge Jennifer Caldwell. Owain is from the first foal crop by Thistledown Arctic Lore; we're really happy with how this new line is crossing with our CadlanValley Pirate daughters.

It can be a challenge to find a quality Section B stallion prospect that is both up-to-height and pretty with good breed type, but Owain ticks off all the boxes for us. We think he's a lovely type to be perpetuated in a good breeding program.

Alvesta Mona Lisa

CadlanValley Pirate x Alvesta Monique by Rosedale El-Senor

Alvesta Mona Lisa, 9-year-old Section B mare owned by Wendy Williams.

Once again, Wendy Williams and her Mona came to the show, and again they went Pleasure Driving Champion! Mona was also awarded Grand Champion in the ever-competitive Sport Pony division!

These two make quite the team; we are forever grateful to Wendy for providing Mona with such a great home and bringing out her potential.

Our thanks to everyone who put time and effort into making the Wild Rose Show a success, and to Sarah's Equine Design, who took many of these pictures. We look forward to #WildRoseShow 2020!
